Before you start

Use your deepthroat key in Claude Desktop’s third-party inference mode. Add credits or start an hourly plan on that key, then install the current desktop app.

Use the desktop configuration window
Claude Desktop reads its third-party inference configuration. The terminal commands in the Claude Code guide configure the standalone CLI; use the steps below for the desktop app.

Setup

    Open Claude Desktop. On Windows, open the application menu ☰; on macOS, use the menu bar. Choose Help → Troubleshooting → Enable Developer Mode and let the app restart.

    Open Developer → Configure Third-Party Inference. In Connection, choose Gateway, a static API key, and Bearer authentication. Copy the gateway URL below and paste your own key into the credential field.
  3. 3
    Download the complete configuration below, replace YOUR_API_KEY locally, and use Import configuration in that window to load all Claude model IDs. Review the imported Connection settings and model list before applying.
  4. 4
    Choose Apply Changes, then Save & Restart when shown. At the sign-in screen, choose the option to use your third-party configuration. Start a short Chat conversation or a local Code session and select a model from the picker.

The gateway URL is https://api.cheapai.gay. Desktop appends /v1/messages to it. Enter the API origin in Connection.

Starting model

All 11 Claude models remain included. This model appears first in the imported list.

Reasoning effort

Set a supported starting effort. You can change it in the desktop model picker.

Replace the key placeholder in the downloaded file on your own device. Keep that completed file private. When updating an existing desktop configuration, export a backup first and review the imported settings.

Models and effort
The configuration uses exact Claude IDs and includes every Claude model in the current catalog. Download it again when models change. Effort choices come from each model’s supported levels; the imported configuration caps the desktop picker at that model’s highest published desktop effort. Use Usage for your actual gateway charges.

Verify & troubleshoot

Send a short prompt and check Activity for the request. Confirm authentication and available IDs with your own key:

  • Gateway was unreachable: confirm the gateway URL and network connection, then fully quit and reopen Desktop.
  • 401: enter your enabled deepthroat API key in the static credential field and select Bearer authentication.
  • 402: add credits or start an hourly plan for the same key.
  • Unknown model: use an exact ID listed above and refresh the downloaded configuration.
  • Read-only configuration: an administrator-managed configuration takes precedence. Ask your administrator to update that configuration.
  • Missing Developer menu: update Claude Desktop and enable Developer Mode through Help → Troubleshooting.

For app setup problems, use Help → Troubleshooting → Generate Diagnostic Report to inspect the applied settings. Third-party mode does not offer Anthropic-hosted cloud sessions or Remote Control. Gateway requests support Messages and client-executed tools; consult the Messages guide for API details.
